Something of a sideshow to the major action on the Western Front, the broader campaign was designed to open up the Dardanelles, allowing safe passage to the Royal Navy in the hope that its appearance outside Constantinople (Istanbul) would force the Ottoman Empire to surrender, on pain of having its capital reduced to rubble. At dawn on 25 April 1915, Australian troops took part in the allied invasion of Turkey’s Gallipoli Peninsula. ![]()
